Some things can only be done when you are on the University network. This typically implies being on the UP grounds and connected to the University network via the LAN / network cable. These include using LDAP, seeing UP network connected devices, making Backups of your data on the UP network and using network printers. This is however still possible if you are off campus by using a VPN. Tuks uses OpenVPN software for this.

It is important to note that the WiFi connection is seen as "off campus". If you want to print to the common EBIT printer, but are connected via the WiFi, you will not be able to.

Setting up your VPN (OpenVPN)

To set up your VPN:

  1. Go to TuksVPN
  2. Log in using your Portal credentials. You will have to accept the risk of a non-secure site. This is because the UP certificates are self-signed. To do this, click on "Details"; and the on "Continue to website (Not Recommended)". The wording depends on the browser used.
  3. Make sure "Login" is selected in the bottom right corner and click on "Go".
  4. Download the OpenVPN software for your operating system.
  5. Also download the Connection profiles for yourself by clicking on the link.
  6. Install the OpenVPN software.
  7. Once the software is installed, load the your Connection Profile from the OpenVPN software.
  8. Login to the VPN with your portal credentials.
