The Pensky Martin Closed Cup Tester in the Tribology Lab used to determine the flash point of petroleum products and lubricants.

The flashpoint of a substance is the lowest temperature at which it will ignite and momentarily burn once exposed to a naked flame. The Pensky Martin Closed Cup Tester can be used to accurately determine the flash point of a lubricant or diesel. It is important to be aware of the flash point of volatile substances such as fuels and diesels in order to improve safety procedures and prevent potential explosions or fires in the laboratory. Knowledge of the flashpoint of a diesel will also enable one to determine whether combustion will take place in a particular engine in which the diesel acts as a fuel.
