Free software as opposed to proprietary software is software that comes with lots of rights you usually don't have when buying software, namely

  1. The right to modify the software (which usually entails having the Source code available, leading to another name for such software -- Open Source software. Open source is a misnomer)
  2. The right to resell the software with or without your modifications
  3. The right to make copies of the software for personal or business use.

Quite different from the usual EULA we all click accept on.
