Chemical Engineering Design was born out of two previous curriculum subjects, namely Heat Transfer and Piping Systems Design. Thus CIO 320 and CMO 310 (Mass Transfer 310) is a continuation of COP 311 (Transfer processes 311). The subject also serves to prepare students for CPJ 421 ( Design project 421) through an assignment focusing on the design of a piping system including a heating/cooling utility.

The subject covers:

  • Heat transfer

Steady and unsteady state conductive heat transfer in one to three dimensions. Temperature distributions. Convective heat transfer. Application of boundary layer theory. Determination of film coefficients. Radiant heat transfer. Boiling and condensation. Design of heat transfer equipment.

  • Momentum Transfer

Application of the mechanical energy balance to single phase Newtonian fluids in steady state systems. Adjustment for multi-phase, non-Newtonian, compressible as well as pulsating systems. Orifice design. Optimal economic choice of pipe diameters, pumps and control valves. Design of piping systems.

  • Design

An assignment covering a heating/cooling system and the piping connecting it.
