Java is an object-oriented language which is cross-platform compatible, as it compiles to run on a virtual machine on your computer, whichever computer or operating system you happen to be using.
What this means is that, to run Java apps, you need the virtual machine (available here). You will need this for quite a few of the programs on the site, so you might as well download it now.
