[http://www.eclipse.org/ Eclipse] is a general platform for the development of [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Integrated_development_environment IDEs]. It is best known for being a Java IDE, but it is possible to install plugins which allow you to edit many other languages, and even to draw diagrams.

There is a local mirror of Eclipse on the campus servers:

* [ftp://ftp.ee.up.ac.za/pub/windows/ide/eclipse-SDK-3.7.1-win32.zip Windows]: Download, unzip and copy the folder to your Program Files folder, then create a shortcut to Eclipse.exe in your start menu.
* [ftp://ftp.ee.up.ac.za/pub/mac/ide/eclipse-SDK-3.7.1-macosx-cocoa-x86_64.tar.gz Mac OS X] Download, uncompress and drag the folder to your Applications folder.

For Linux, simply install Eclipse using your package manager
