View source for Finding your IP address

Your IP (Internet Protocol) address is a number that identifies your network card on the local network. It will often be required for work that requires network access.

To find it in Windows:
# Click "Start", then "Run" (or press Windowskey+R)
# In the dialog box, type "cmd" and hit enter
# A black window will appear. Type "ipconfig /all" and hit enter
# The IP address appears as a number of the form 137.215.xxx.xxx (on campus)

To find it in Linux:
As root, run ifconfig from a terminal (note the difference -- "f" instead of "p").
