Welcome to the Process modelling and control group website. We aim to gather information that will be of interest to students completing their postgraduate course in Control Engineering, but will also interest many other people. Have a look at some of the [[PMC Articles|articles/literature surveys]] done by [[Legendary PMC Members|members of the PMC group]].

==PM&C Lab==
The [[PMC Lab]] page holds information about the laboratory we run on campus. You can also link through to [[lab admin]] for access to administrative functions.
* New lab users can read [[PMC Lab|this]] for more information about the lab and the rigs (including their documentation).
* The set up of new computers and software is discussed [[PMC Lab Users|here]].
* A list of the computers in the PMC labs can be found [[PMC Lab Computers|here]]. (''under construction'')

==Honeywell Lab==
The [[Honeywell lab]] (Engineering II room 2-44) contains 15 computers donated by Honeywell. It is used as the venue for the [[Process Modelling and Control]] group's postgraduate lectures and from time to time for other activities.

==Free Software==
Do you want free alternatives to Matlab, Microsoft Office or Outlook? Yes, you have the choice not to pirate all the software you need for your University work. It's called free software. You may have heard of [http://www.linux.org GNU/Linux], but there is hope for people who still want to run other operating systems.
* Have a look at our [[Open Source]] and [[Free Software]] wiki pages for more information and downloads.
* Using Linux? Know of interesting packages other users might find useful? Add it to Ragnarok's [[Linux Apps|Linux applications page]].

==Licenced Software==
The University of Pretoria has licences for [[Licenced Software]] that are mostly donated by the producing organisations.

==Free Simulator==
We are working on a project to produce a free dynamic simulator for quick and dirty dynamics checks and academic purposes. Here are some pertinent links:
* Our [[Dynamic Simulator]] wiki page has more information on this project.
* The topic has also been discussed on [http://ask.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/10/06/1835217&mode=thread&tid=134&tid=185 slashdot].

|}

== Software ==
The temperature transmitters are connected to the PC using standard RS-232 (serial) connections. Therefore, the connection protocol needs to be manually configured. The default (working) settings for the two units are displayed below. Note that they can be programmed to use different settings (consult the manual for instructions).
* Baud: 9600 bits per second
* Data bits: 8
* Parity: None
* Stop bits: 1
* Flow control: None / Xon Xoff
The units do not supply data in a continuous stream, and needs to be prompted for data. The command to send to a unit to request a reading is;
TA$

Windmill (a free-ware serial communication application) is used for serial communication and data logging. The units are set up using '''ConfIML''' is used to configure the units, their channels and data parsing (see below). '''SetupIML''' is then used to generate an instrument data file, which specifies the names, units and scaling of the channels. Finally, '''Logger''' is used to read data and save it to file.

A point to note is that Windmill does not save the entire data message (received from the unit) to file, it relies on the correct parsing of the message. '''comDebug''' (also a Windmill application) can be used to troubleshoot communication to/from the units. Info obtained from '''comDebug''' identifies the data message received from the units as 14 byte message, with 8 blank bytes, 4 data bytes and 2 trailing bytes for a carriage return and newline. A sufficient parsing string (to be used when setting up the units in '''SetupIML''') is to ignore the first 8 bytes and then extract data until the carriage return. Thus,

Since 2010, Matlab is no longer used for this experimental setup. However, the .m code for serial communication for this setup is available [ftp://ragnarok.up.ac.za/publicftp/3rd_year_lab/heating_dynamics_experiment/software/pre-2010%20software here].

The units do not supply data in a contiuous stream, and needs to be prompted for data. The command to send to a unit to request a reading is;

Thus,

This page documents the flow experiment in the 3rd year labs. It is used as one of the experiments for the Process Dynamics ([[CPN 321]]) component of Laboratory ([[CLB 321]]). The sections below lists the equipment currently on the rig, and links to software/manuals concerned with the setup.
== Hardware ==
=== Experimental setup ===
The experiment consists of feed tank, from which water is pumped to two cascading tanks. Water flows, due to gravity, from these tanks (through valves) and finally into a collection tank. Water can then be pumped back from the collection tank to the feed tank.
=== Instruments/Devices ===
The following instruments and devices are fitted onto the flow experiment;
==Opto==

'''OpTo''' is how we send/receive information from the rigs.

In the PM&C laboratory, all [[Analog to Digital Conversion|analog to digital conversion]] is handled by the OPTO22 units in the central box in the laboratory. The control units for each group of AD modules is known as a Brain, and is connected to the network so that all the computers on the local network (and maybe even the Internet in the future) are able to access the values of the readings and write outputs to the [[PMC Lab|rigs]].

=== Opto Setup ===

To start using the Opto, follow the following procedure:

1) Switch on transmitters. There are electrical plugs at the rigs that need to be switched on. Be careful not to switch on a pump by accident!

2) Switch on power supply units in the Opto JB.

3) Check LEDs on the Opto brain to see if there are any errors. LED meanings are described in [http://ragnarok/programdownloads/Opto22/1112_SNAP_Ethernet_Brain_Users_Guide.pdf SNAP Ethernet Brain Users Guide]. If you do come up with an issue and manage to fix it please document it here.

4) Check that your SNAP modules are snaped into the system. Idealy they should be connected and configured but they are most probably not.

5) Check connectivity with the Brain by opening the command promt (Start->run->cmd) and pinging the brain (e.g. "ping OPTO2"). If you can't ping the brain, check that you are on the same subnet (see [[Finding your IP address]]) and see if the first three bytes are the same as the Opto. Your IP should be 137.215.117.xxx) If this doesn't work contact your Network Administrator.

6) Configure the SNAP modules. Run Start->All Programs->Opto 22->SNAP Ethernet IO Configurator. see one of the existing configuration files as an example. I have found that the configuration fails in some cases if you don't configure all the attached SNAP modules, the workaround here is to pull out everyone else's SNAP modules. Ideally all the SNAPs should be connected and there should be one master configuration file for each Opto brain and then you are only responsible for setting up the scaling in the file. I cannot figure out how the scaling works, if you figure it out please document it here. I used default scaling and converted the mA signal to engineering units in my application.

Opto provides a C API to code your own Opto interface applications. Included with this is an example application (\\freki\C$:\Opto22\OptoENET-IO\DriverToolkit\Examples\C++\VC6\Eiocon\Release\eiocon.exe) that you can use to easily test communication with the brain and easily writing manual data to the rig. Run the application from the command prompt with the Opto brain's ip as an argument (Start->run->cmd)
cd C:\Opto22\OptoENET-IO\DriverToolkit\Examples\C++\VC6\Eiocon\Release
eiocon.exe 137.215.117.238
Type '''help''' to see a list of available commands. Consult [http://ragnarok/programdownloads/Opto22/1112_SNAP_Ethernet_Brain_Users_Guide.pdf this] for information regarding the point numbers.

=== Matlab ===

A Simulink example shows how to access a rig through Matlab. Basically you need an <tt>opto22.m</tt> file in the appropriate Matlab directory refering to the point number on the opto. Before your PC will communicate through the LAN you need to run the opto22 service. Start by coping the .dll from [http://ragnarok.up.ac.za/programdownloads/Matlab/DirectoptoDLL/MatLabOpto.dll here] (right click and save as...) to <tt>c:\windows\system32</tt>. Then run <tt>cmd</tt> and start the service with
<pre>
regsvr32 MatLabOpto
</pre>
You will get a success message.

----
==Real Time vs Simulation Time==

You also need the [http://ragnarok.up.ac.za/programdownloads/Matlab/Rtclock/rtclock.dll <tt>rtclock.dll</tt>] and [http://ragnarok.up.ac.za/programdownloads/Matlab/Rtclock/rtc.mdl <tt>rtc.mdl</tt>] files to keep everything synchronised. Make sure that you also have [http://ragnarok.up.ac.za/programdownloads/Matlab/Rtclock/rtclock.c <tt>rtclock.c</tt>]. If you have trouble with this procedure, follow any one of the three methods below to synchronize real time with simulation time.

Matlab has a separate product called "Real-Time Workshop" to synchronize real time with simulation time. The Real-Time Workshop can create stand-alone executable files which will run in real-time when under a Real-Time Operating System/embedded system. For more on this product, please see:

http://www.mathworks.com/products/rtw/.

It is also possible to turn you own PC into a Real-Time Operating System, with the Real-Time Windows Target.
If you are only interested in slowing your model down within Simulink to view results, please see the following:

There are three example folders in the attached [ftp://ragnarok.up.ac.za/publicftp/lab/Matlab/examples.zip zip file].

===Example 1===

An example of a MATLAB function which goes into a "busy wait" loop which kills time to slow down the simulation until the real-time clock catches up to the Simulink clock:
* Open the folder example1

.
* Run the model rtc.mdl.

===Example 2===

An example of a C-MEX S-function that compares simulation time with the system clock time to slow down the simulation speed:
* Open the folder example2

.
* Execute the command:
<pre>
MEX sfun_time.c

 (In the MATLAB command-line).
</pre>
* Run the model rtc_C.

===Example 3===

A MEX-file which syncs a simulation to the PC internal clock or the UNIX system clock. This is an older example the was created for Simulink 1.3c:
* Open the folder example 3.
* Execute the command
:
<pre>
CMEX rtclock.c (
in MATLAB 4.x) (In the MATLAB command-line).
MEX rtclock.c (
in MATLAB 5.x and above)
 (In the MATLAB command-line).
</pre>
* Run the M-File rtc.m to create a new model with a "Real-time clock" block created from the C-file above.

In all of these examples the sine function acts as "simulation". The other simulation can just be dragged into the system where you want to synchronize.

Please note that all of the above examples will allow the system will run approximately Real-Time, but not exactly. If you need the simulation to run in exact Real-Time, please look at the Real-Time Workshop along with a Real-Time Operating System.
The models used by model predictive controllers (MPCs) to predict future outcomes are usually unconstrained forms like impulse response-, response- or discrete state space models. Certain MPC algorithms allow constraints to be imposed on the inputs or outputs of a system; but, as they are not coupled with the process model and checked for consistency, infeasible constraints can be specified. <center>'''<big>A Systematic Approach to Multivariable Predictive Controller Constraint Handling: Rigorous Geometric Methods</big>'''</center><br/>
<center>André H. Campher and Carl Sandrock<br/>
''Department of Chemical Engineering, University of Pretoria''</center>

The models used in multivariable predictive controllers (MPCs) are, typically, mathematically unconstrained. Certain MPC algorithms allow constraints to be imposed on the inputs or outputs of a system, but do so in a manner that is decoupled from the process model. This ad hoc specification can lead to infeasible and unrealistic constraints being specified for controllers. A method to determine and handle input/output constraints, taking their inherent interdependence into account, would therefore be an attractive addition to commercial MPC packages.

A rigorous and systematic approach to constraint management was developed, using the operability index (Vinson & Georgakis, 2000) as the basis for the design. The method supports linear and non-linear (polynomial) steady-state systems, and provides an interactive interface where the following actions can be taken and information obtained;
* effects of constraint changes on the corresponding and other input/output constraints,
* feasibility checks for given constraints,
* constraint type information,
* specification of constraint-set size (number of constraints to use) and
* optimal fitting of output constraints within the desirable output space.
Focus was placed on making the method rigorous with regards to the use of the process model and the clear distinction between constraint types. Ample feedback to the user was added to the interface to increase interactivity.

It was ensured that the outputs of the program were compatible with commercial MPC packages, such as Honeywell’s RMPCT® and AspenTech’s DMCPlus®. The aforementioned packages were used in conjunction with the developed software to test functionality and performance of the method. The method was applied to case studies from Anglo Platinum, the Tennessee Eastman sample problem and laboratory scale test rigs.

AndreC: External images

When creating a wiki page for information and file sharing, the upload of files and images are important. In this context "files" refer to files that are not explicitly displayed on the wiki, for instance [ftp://ragnarok/publicftp/documents/linux/ubuntupocketguide-v1-1.pdf this pdf file]. "Images" refer to pictures and graphs shown on the wiki pages, for example the logo panel on the [[Main Page]] and the photo on the [[pH rig]] page.

== Images ==
Uploading and using images on the wiki is a simple procedure using only the web browser.
===Uploading===
* Click the [[Special:Upload|Upload file]] link on the left (below Toolbox). You must be [[Special:UserLogin|logged in]] to upload.
* Click Browse to select the image to upload (permitted file types: png, gif, jpg, jpeg)
* Fill in a filename (important) and description and click Upload file.

===Inserting in pages===
Using the filename as entered when uploading the image, one of the following forms can be used to display the image;
* '''<nowiki>[[File:File.jpg]]</nowiki>''' to use the full version of the file
* '''<nowiki>[[File:File.png|200px|thumb|left|alt text]]</nowiki>''' to use a 200 pixel wide rendition in a box in the left margin with 'alt text' as description
The [http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Help:Images Mediawiki] image help page can be consulted for more explanations and options when using images.

=== External images ===
The wiki also supports external images (i.e. images not uploaded using the [[Special:Upload|Upload file]] link). There are some issues which needs to be noted when using this feature;
* External, used here, refers only to sites on the UP network - the server does not have proxy access.
* At present, only the http protocol is supported. Public ftp files can be accessed (using http) with the following link: http://ragnarok.up.ac.za/ftp/
* Using image commands (e.g. thumbnailing and resizing) is not possible as these commands are performed by the wiki only on files which have been uploaded to it. In short, a large image will be displayed in its original size.
* Usage: simply use the url of the image, e.g. '''<nowiki>http://web.up.ac.za/images/UP_centenary_logo.jpg</nowiki>'''
== Files ==
===Uploading===
Uploading files to the wiki requires an [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FTP_clients ftp client] (Windows Explorer also works). Most ftp clients have a GUI making file uploading very similar to file management in a file manager such as Windows Explorer or Nautilus. Anonymous access to the ftp or simply ftp://ragnarok/publicftp (type this in the Windows Explorer address bar) allows for file uploading in the ''publicftp'' directory (or its subdirectories).
===Linking to files===
Once uploaded, the files can be linked to in a page using standard external links (as explained in the [[Help:Formatting#Links|formatting/links help page]]). As an example, the Ubuntu Pocket Guide can be linked to using;
<nowiki>[ftp://ragnarok/publicftp/documents/linux/ubuntupocketguide-v1-1.pdf Ubuntu Pocket Guide]</nowiki>
which generates this;
[ftp://ragnarok/publicftp/documents/linux/ubuntupocketguide-v1-1.pdf Ubuntu Pocket Guide]

AndreC: /* Using fsolve */ (incomplete sentence)

== Common Matlab/Octave errors ==
=== Function outputs ===
Remember that when you define a function with an output:
function thisout = functionname (thisin)
you have to give the output (<tt>thisout</tt>) a value. Results of calculations stay
within functions unless they are explicitly set to an output.

=== Undefined variables ===
By default, variables are private to the functions in which they are used. Therefore, if you want
to use a variable within a function, pass it as an input. If you want to use a variable outside of a
function, set it as an output.

=== Size of derivative vectors ===
The following error,
<pre>
error: lsode: evaluation of user-supplied function failed
error: lsode: inconsistent sizes for state and derivative vectors
</pre>
can be caused by two problems - the most likely being a mismatch between your system differentials'
output size and the starting value vector size, when calling <tt>lsode</tt>. Make sure that there is
a starting value for each of the states for which your system function calculates a derivative.

The second case is when you have a derivative output which (for some obscure reason) grows in size
(dimensions).

=== Strange size errors ===
A very common error that can be hard to track down is shown below:
<pre>
octave> a = [1 -(1+2); 3]
error: number of columns must match (1 != 2)
</pre>

The problem is that Octave is interpreting the - as a negation (making it negative) rather than a subtraction, so there are actually two elements in the first row. The best way to avoid this problem is to use spaces on both sides of + and - signs at all times.

=== Plotting problems ===
Most common plotting problem: you plot but "nothing happens". The plot window appears but is blank. You are very probably plotting scalar values instead of vectors. Check this by repeating the plot using a more visible marker style like
<pre>
plot(x, y, 's') % squares
</pre>
If you see a single dot, you have forgotten to add elements to your vectors.

A common plotting pattern is
<pre>
x = []
for i = 1:10
newx = f(); % newx is calculated somehow
x = [x newx]; % add element to vector
end
plot(x)
</pre>
The single dot plot means you have probably forgotten to add elements to the vector, so the code looks like
<pre>
x = newx
</pre>

=== Using fsolve ===
fsolve is a numeric root finding routine. If fsolve is not working for you, you probably have one of the following problems:

# Mistake in equations. If you can, work out the root manually and substitute the root into your function. If it does not evaluate to zero, the equation may be wrong.
# Wrong initial guess. The results that you obtain are highly dependant on your initial guess, so if the solver fails to converge consider changing the starting value.

Welcome to the Process modelling and control group website. We aim to gather information that will be of interest to students completing their postgraduate course in Control Engineering, but will also interest many other people. Have a look at some of the [[PMC Articles|articles/literature surveys]] done by members of the PMC group.

==PM&C Lab==

==Free Software==

==Licenced Software==
The University of Pretoria has licences for some software used in the "Real World". Have a look at our [[Licenced Software]] wiki pages for more information.

==Free Simulator==

This page contains information that new users to the PM&C labs will find useful. The set up of internet access, computers, etc. are discussed in the sections below. For more information about the rigs and equipment in the lab see [[PMC Lab|this page]].

Information about using the PMC lab printer can be found [[Lab Printer|here]].
__FORCETOC__
== New computers ==

New computers have to be registered on the network. Technically, their NIC (Network Interface Card)s have to be registered. Send an email to [mailto:help@it.up.ac.za help@it.up.ac.za] and ask them to register a domain name. You could also phone them on x3051 (search for it on the [http://mx1.up.ac.za/ldap directory service]). If you phone remember to speak slowly and spell any complicated words like "acetone" or "dist" or "temperature".

The information you need to include is:
* A Name - We use names from [[Norse Mythology]].
* Your MAC address - Get this by running Start|run|cmd and typing ipconfig /all. This is the value after "Physical Address". Avoid registering by using the NIC from the previous computer (you will have to stick with the name though).
* Your subnet - All of main campus is on the 137.215 subnet. The control lab (in fact, most of Eng II) is on the 137.215.117 subnet.

You should be able to check that the help desk did their job by rebooting or by running Start|run|ipconfig/renew (this might take a day to be completed)

The computers from Createk already have Microsoft XP Professional installed. They also have the [[Windows Update]] and [[Anti Virus|Anti-virus]] installed. The following needs to be changed/added (if necessary):
* The QoS Packet Scheduler Service (Service)
* Client for Microsoft Networks (Client)
* File and Printer Sharing for Microsft Networks (Service)

This can be done by changing the properties of Lan connection under Network connections in the Control Panel. Then under the general tab, add the items (as services or clients) if not already there. Then run the network setup wizard (also in the control panel's network connections) using the default settings. You must be a member of the PROSESLAB workgroup. Do not create a setup disk and exit the wizard. You can now access and be accessed from other computers.

== Software set-up ==

Now that you have a new computer you need some software. In the lab you probably need the following:

'''Microsoft Office''' - The university has some license with Microsoft so ask around where you can get an original CD.

'''Acrobat Reader''' - The latest version starts instantly and is available from [ftp://ftp.up.ac.za/mirrors/adobe.com/ ftp.up.ac.za].

'''[[Matlab]] 2007a''' - The latest version is required to run all the communication stuff we need. Remember to register the [[Opto22]] service

'''[[Anti Virus|Anti-virus Software]]''' - A vital necessity

'''[[Windows Update]]''' - A vital necessity

'''Alternative Browser and Email Application''' - A mozilla.org based web browser and email client is strongly recommended. We try not to use Internet Explorer as it is useless and prone to viruses, worms and spyware. Check out the Mozilla web Suite (maybe the seamonkey version) or Firefox (the second most used browser). They are all available from [ftp://ftp.up.ac.za/mirrors/mozilla.org/ ftp.up.ac.za]. Mozilla and Firefox are far quicker, more reliable and more secure than Internet Explorer. Tabbed browsing is another feature that will make you wonder why people still use Internet Explorer. You can also use Opera (but ensure that at least Firefox is on the rig computers. Thunderbird (also from Mozilla.org) is an excellent mail application. Ensure that automatic updates for the alternative browsers are turned off and rather use the new versions release on the ftp site to save that internet access.

'''Some Media Player''' - Winamp 5 is recommended. In the lab we play music over Heimdall. The music is kept in <tt>C:\music</tt> (this folder is not generally shared). It is recommended that you install NetAmp to control the volume of Heimdall from you workstation. This is useful if the phone rings etc. NetAmp is already installed on Heimdall as a server using the default port.<br/>
Downloads:
*[http://ragnarok.up.ac.za/programdownloads/Media/winamp509_pro.exe Winamp 5]
*[http://ragnarok.up.ac.za/programdownloads/Media/Netamp.exe NetAmp]

'''VNC''' - This is a stylish program to allow you to access other computers directly. It is usefull if you want to access a rig computer form the comfort of your cubicle or if you need to change the playlist on heimdall while somebody else is using the screen for [[PMC Lab Computers|Ragnarok]]. On a rig computer you need to install the server as well (remember to add the standard password). You will also need to add it as an exception to the Windows XP firewall. On your personnel computer where you probably don't want people to have remote control you merely need to copy the small VNC Viewer program.<br/>
Downloads:
* [http://ragnarok.up.ac.za/programdownloads/VNC_WIN32/vncviewer/vncviewer.exe VNC Viewer]
* [http://ragnarok.up.ac.za/programdownloads/VNC_WIN32/vnc-3.3.6-x86_win32.exe Client and Server]

== Internet access ==

To get internet access a document (which needs to be signed by the head of the department) needs to be completed. This document can be obtained from Zenobia Botha (on floor 5, NWII building) or [http://www.up.ac.za/intranet/it/documentation/docs/INT1035.pdf here]. The completed form may be handed in at room 1-25, NWII building, or sent by email to [mailto:help@it.up.ac.za help@it.up.ac.za]. Applications are processed within three days. Applicants
must personally visit room 5-6, NWII building, to obtain their username and password – this is a security measure to protect the applicant.

Unless the cost point, staff/student number and signature of the head of the department are provided, the application cannot be processed.

'''Proxy Servers''' - You may want to remember these autoconfiguraion script locations (the IPs and ports are also shown):
*<nowiki>http://innopac.up.ac.za:8080/proxy.pac</nowiki> (The AIS one - not sure why you would want to use this - maybe read ScienceDirect)
** IP: 137.215.9.20 PORT: 8080
*<nowiki>http://www.up.ac.za/proxy.pac</nowiki> (This is what you want to set your browser (etc) to for normal firewall access)
** IP: 137.215.6.53 PORT: 8080
*<nowiki>http://www.up.ac.za/proxyc1.pac</nowiki> (Set your browser (etc) to this if you are using a Novell Account)

A guy called Richard M Stalman had this idea that software should be free as in freedom (check out [http://ragnarok.up.ac.za/documents/faif.pdf faif.pdf]). A bit too long for a casual glance, right? The gist is that "normal" software these days is closed and proprietary. This means that no-one can modify the programs without permission of the authors. The formats we use are also closed and proprietary, meaning that it is nearly impossible to open the files we all need to read (.doc is not a global standard).

The real name for the kind of software that Stallman had in mind is [[Free Software]], but Open source is used a lot, and more accessible.

This website is hosted on a server running [[Ubuntu]] (a free operating system based on the Linux kernel), using Apache. The documents you will find on this website are all readable by anyone (and not just using [[PMC Lab Users|Acrobat reader]]).

There are several places to get open source software. On campus, there are several mirrors of open source software. Check out the FTP site ftp://ftp.up.ac.za/mirrors . OpenOffice is a free software replacement for Microsoft office. Firefox is the best browser out there and also happens to be free. It can also be used together with Thunderbird to replace Microsoft Outlook (mail and calendar).

Of course, there are tons of free software titles out there. Try looking at [http://freshmeat.net/ freshmeat.org] or [http://sourceforge.net/ sourceforge.org] when you need software. You'd be surprised how many of the programs that you would pirate are available for free. Some software often runs better than those you would have pirated.
== Open source downloads ==

The table below contains some commonly used software and suggestions for open source replacements. Most downloads are available locally and won't use up your internet credits when you're on campus.

This page is dedicated to troubleshooting of the Opto22 system. Additions to this page should be made in a ''Symptom/Solution''-style. The goal is to provide a 'first place to look'-list for other Opto users and help minimise downtime.
__FORCETOC__
== General Information ==
This table contains info regarding the two Opto brains. It might be useful when troubleshooting network-related issues. Although the physical network point doesn't, strictly speaking, make a difference - it's good to know this in case of network restructuring (note: this has happened before).
== Opto Brains ==
=== 3 Volt Fault ===
'''Symptom'''<br/>
The LED indicating a 3 Volt fault is on and the Opto unit can't be communicated with. Resetting the IP manually (see [http://ragnarok/programdownloads/Opto22/1112_SNAP_Ethernet_Brain_Users_Guide.pdf Brain manual]) is also not possible in this state.<br/>
'''Solution'''<br/>
Use a multimeter and check the 5V supply voltage to the rail; the Opto brains require 5V DC (+/-0.1V). If it's found that the supplied voltage is below 4.9V, adjust the output of the power supply (if possible). As a check, test the 'broken' power supply on a working Opto brain to confirm that it is indeed the power supply that has failed and not a short in the brain.

== SNAP Modules ==

<!--Please add problems (e.g. 3 Volt Fault) as 3rd level headings. Do NOT add Symptom/Solutions as headings as this will overpopulate and clutter the Table Of Contents-->

AndreC: FTP - Mac users note

Ragnarok hosts files using several different protocols.

* [http://ragnarok http access] is what you are using to view this page.
* [ftp://ragnarok ftp access] can be used from your browser and is the preferred way to link to files from the wiki.
* [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Server_Message_Block CIFS/SMB] is the Microsoft Windows file sharing protocol, which is widely supported.

Files are divided into Personnel-only, Student and Group files. A public ftp directory also exists mainly for files linked to the wiki. All three protocols direct to the same files (of a user) and will require authentication (with the slight exception of the public ftp). The use of each protocol is briefly described in the sections below. The username '''''personnel''''' will be used in all examples.

Ask [mailto:carl.sandrock@up.ac.za Carl] about obtaining write-access (so that you can upload or change files).

==HTTP==
The http protocol is mainly used to communicate with websites using browsers such as Firefox, Safari and Internet Explorer. The following http access methods are possible on Ragnarok;
* [http://ragnarok http://ragnarok] : this takes you to the main page of the wiki (http://ragnarok/wiki).
* [http://ragnarok/personnel http://ragnarok/personnel] : this takes you to the shared files of a user (just replace ''personnel'' with your given username). Access to this directory (and all files in this folder) will require authentication. Files can be linked to the wiki from this directory (and subdirectories) but will require authentication when accessed.

==FTP==
The ftp protocol is the prefered method for linking files to the wiki. Public ftp should be used for open access files and the local ftp for private files. Files can be uploaded on the server using ftp clients such as FileZilla, gFTP, Cyberduck (Mac) or Nautilus. The general access structure is;
* [ftp://ragnarok/ ftp://ragnarok/] : this takes you to the public ftp when using browsers. When using a ftp client you will be prompted to log in, this is equivalent to anonymous login with no password.
* [ftp://personnel@ragnarok/ ftp://personnel@ragnarok/] : this prompts for authentication and takes you to the files of the user. You will also be taken to this directory when you login as a user using an ftp client.
===Public FTP===
The [ftp://ragnarok/publicftp public ftp] is mainly used for file uploads to link to the wiki. Anonymous users can upload files but not delete them. Therefore make sure that the file is being uploaded to the correct location and that it is the final version of that file.
===Local FTP===
As discussed above, access to the local (private) ftp of a user requires authentication. Note that when linking private files to the wiki the following form should be used;
ftp://personnel@ragnarok/something/somethingelse.doc
As with all private files, authentication will be required.
===Mac users===
When using Finder, for the ftp-shares on Ragnarok, shares are mounted as read-only (for both user and anonymous login). This seems to be an issue with Finder itself. Users are therefore advised to use another ftp client, like Cyberduck (locally available [ftp://ragnarok/publicftp/programdownloads/Cyberduck-3.4.1.zip here]).

A download of [ftp://ragnarok/publicftp/programdownloads/RCDefaultApp-2.1.X.dmg RCDefaultApp] is also available, should the user wish to change the default application used to open ftp sites (i.e. so that Safari uses Cyberduck instead of Finder).

==CIFS/SMB==
The shared files of a user/group can be accessed using a file manager such as Windows Explorer or Nautilus. Windows users may want to [[Map network drives]] for the server. If you are not personnel, you can simply browse the files available to all users by clicking Start, selecting Run and typing <tt>\\ragnarok</tt>.

===Uploading===
===Linking to files===
Once uploaded, the files can be linked to in a page using standard external links (as explained in the [[Help:Formatting#Links|formatting/links help page]]). As an example, the Ubuntu Pocket Guide can be linked to using;
<nowiki>[ftp://ragnarok/publicftp/documents/linux/ubuntupocketguide-v1-1.pdf Ubuntu Pocket Guide]</nowiki>

==HTTP==
The http protocol is mainly used to communicate with websites using browsers such as Firefox, Safari and Internet Explorer. The following http access methods are possible on Ragnarok;

==FTP==
The ftp protocol is the prefered method for linking files to the wiki. Public ftp should be used for open access files and the local ftp for private files. Files can be uploaded on the server using ftp clients such as FileZilla, gFTP or Nautilus. The general access structure is;
* [ftp://ragnarok/ ftp://ragnarok/] : this takes you to the public ftp when using browsers.
===Public FTP===
The [ftp://ragnarok/publicftp public ftp] is mainly used for file uploads to link to the wiki. Anonymous users can upload files but not delete them. Therefore make sure that the file is being uploaded to the correct location and that it is the final version of that file.
===Local FTP===
As discussed above, access to the local (private) ftp of a user requires authentication. Note that when linking private files to the wiki the following form should be used;
ftp://personnel@ragnarok/something/somethingelse.doc
As with all private files, authentication will be required.

==CIFS/SMB==

== Open source downloads ==

The table below contains some commonly used software and suggestions for open source replacements. Most downloads are available locally and won't use up your internet credits when you're on campus.
Maintenance and changes made to the pH rig before 2009 are not explicitly maintained on the wiki. Consult the project documentation of previous years for said changes.
'''Wiring/Instrumentation'''<br/>
[[File:Pmc02ph_instruments.JPG|300px|right|thumb|pH rig instruments showing new temp. transmitter housing and turned pH transmitter cover]]
Wiring of rig found to be in a state of disrepair. An attempt is made to fix all wiring and restore all electronic equipment to a working condition. Fixed equipment/wiring is listed below:
* I/P transducer for control valve 2 and 1 faulty. Replaced both transducers, reconnected piping and wiring.
* Control valve 2 - reconnected piping.
* All the RTDs and temperature transmitters have been removed from the rig (scavenged). Fitted an RTD to each tank and wired to new temperature transmitters.
* Housing for temperature transmitters made and fitted to rig (see image).
* Control valve 1 seems to be stuck. Apparently the original valve was removed and replaced by current non-working valve. Valve was opened and oiled and reconnected to new I/P transducer. In working order now.
* Original Signet flow sensor has been removed from rig. A new Burkert flow sensor was fitted to the inlet of tank 3. Old signal conditioner was removed and its power supply removed from the DB. Cable 006 from the DB was wired to the loop power and a Burkert flow transmitter was installed. Unfortunately, both Burkert flow transmitters (brand new) were faulty and the flow measurement has been abandoned due to time constraints.
* Re-fitted pH transmitter 1 and connected a new pH probe.
* PH probe connected to pH transmitter 2 has stopped working. Replaced with working probe. Short wire on new probed forced the cover of pH transmitter 2 to be turned around so as to reach top tank (see image).
* Pump 2 (base pump) was delivering a very low flow when compared to the identical pump 1 (acid pump). The impeller of pump 2 was most likely damaged due to bad decommissioning of the rig. The two pumps were switched so that the 'slower' pump operates on the line which has no control valves.
[[File:Pmc02ph_tankstand_before.JPG|150px|thumb|Old feed tank stand]] [[File:Pmc02ph_tankstand_after.JPG|150px|thumb|New feed tank stand]]
'''Piping'''<br/>
Numerous leaks were fixed and connections made where piping has been scavenged off the rig.

'''Structural'''
* Stands for feed tanks (currently dustbins) were found to not give sufficient support when tanks are full. Constructed new feed tank stand.
* Fitting of stirrers to tanks found to be flimsy. Versatility of stands (moving them around) outweighed effort to construct new stands. Left as is, but sturdier stands are recommended.
* Rerouted pipe connecting CV001 and FE001 - cut away some of the metal structure to remove strain from pipe.
